Inositol is a vitamin-like substance sometimes also called vitamin B8, as it works together with the B complex. Inositol has a structural significance in the body and is part of the cell membranes, where it contributes to normal cell function and affects the cells' signalling. Inositol interacts with receptors that mediate signalling and is part of, among other things, the serotonin system. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects mood. Balanced serotonin levels contribute to us feeling good and balanced. Inositol also affects the hormone insulin and helps counteract insulin resistance. Insulin, in turn, is necessary for normal blood sugar control.
Inositol also works together with choline in the metabolism of fat in the body, and in the production of lecithin. Lecithin, in turn, is involved in the transport of cholesterol.
In PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), a hormonal disorder that can affect women of childbearing age, research studies are ongoing using inositol to affect cellular processes.
